Neither Emu Nor Ostrich

We think the key question is for the working class to organise independently and fight as a class against both sections of the ruling class in a referendum. For this reason we advocate an active abstention campaign  - the spoiling of ballot papers.

First the ostriches

The Bennite left has always been hostile to Europe and the same logic drives groups like Scargill's Socialist Labour Party. There is an appalling chauvinism that is involved in the traditional left position.

The Bennite objection to Europe can be summarised along the lines that Europe will not allow socialist measures and therefore socialists should be opposed to Europe. This conception of socialism seems to involve bureaucrats and officials waving red cards and declaring socialist goals offside. Socialism as a movement radically restructuring society does not seem to be on the agenda. To illustrate the point, imagine the anti-poll tax movement at its peak, packing up and going home because some bureaucrat had declared it outside the law.

We do not think we are being ultra-left here: We are being realistic. If you believe in, and wish to fight for socialism, then do you really believe that socialism will come about purely by decrees passed by a bunch of benevolent socialist politicians in government?

Those members of the Socialist Alliance who say we should vote no are not, of course, narrow nationalists. Rather, they think that we can better fight for socialism if Britain has a limited engagement in the EU. We reject that. We think that capitalism has created the social force that will abolish it. That force is the world-wide unity of the most exploited. For us, the more capital brings us under one government the more that millions of people will recognise their fundamental unity. All members of the Socialist Alliance campaign for unity. However, that unity will be easier to achieve if we face a common enemy organised in a single state.

Emu eggs or ostrich steaks anyone?

e are against the Euro. We are also against the pound, the dollar and the franc. We want to see a world in which there is no need for currency, full stop. However, in the meantime we need to propose policies about the issues concerning daily life now.

As socialists we reject the positions of both the major groupings of big business on the Euro. The Euros see a fat killing to be made out of the whole European working class. They are in conflict with the ostriches which think that it is easier to bash the poor if Britain is outside the Euro. Sadly, there are also socialists on each side each like a weird sorts of mirror image of one or other group of bosses.

No to the Euro (Cont from page 4)

We need real workers solidarity across Europe, not a capitalist re-organisation that will lead to greater attacks on workers. In the short term that means that we should try to build the European Social Forum in Florence in November, which will seek to unite anti-capitalists and working class activists across Europe.

In any referendum over the Euro I think it means we should campaign for a No vote. Obviously we should oppose anti-European arguments based on nationalism, xenophobia or on sovereignty. But we also need to be clear that European Monetary Union is a hostile project from the employers, and as we seek to defend the interests of the working class we should oppose it.
