Neither Emu Nor Ostrich (cont)

A number of socialists plead that the European exploiters are nicer than the Anglo-American lot. We reject that. As we see it, any defence of the undoubted social benefits of some European law can only be taken forward against the big businesses behind the Brussels bureaucrats.

To take either side is to be drawn in behind one group of bosses or the other. Let them fight their own battles. We think that the Socialist Alliance should urge our supporters to spoil the ballot paper with the slogan 'no to the bosses referendum'. This is a small step, a minor show of defiance. However, a significant number of spoilt papers would be a marker for the battles to come whether inside or outside the new currency.

(Continued from page 5)

To summarise, we think we should reject the anti-EU perspective of the traditional left as chauvinist and argue for socialism and internationalism. We should not be anti-EU as such - let's stay in Europe and advocate socialism.

Emu steaks anyone?

The logic of the above seems to say that we should join with Tony Blair, the Tory wets (remember them?) and the Lib Dems to battle to get into the Euro. We think that socialists should do no such thing. The Euro is about one bloc of capital improving its chances against another. We say that we should leave it to the bosses to advance their own cause.
